The 18th of October is going to be a special day of super-smoove tracks and trippy Super 8 visuals.

Mammal, a rather excellent Edinburgh band and us are going to have an analogue love-in at the Wee red Bar. We were commissioned to create new visuals to be projected live for their peformance which will be around 40 minutes long. This will be the longest that we’ve had to keep multiple projectors running with just us supplying the film - it’s gonna hot, sweaty and hopefully, very very pretty.

Pageant is very excited to be hosting a day of Super 8 workshops with resident film genius, Steve Cook of SUPER8SUPER8.

Forget computer animation - this hands on workshop will give participants the opportunity to work directly with Super 8 film, creating special effects by cutting, splicing, bleaching and painting directly onto the film.

Following the day’s tuition, the budding Super 8 heads will have the chance to show their stuff at an informal screening in the evening, which rules!

As if that wasn’t cool enough, we’ll also have a set of shimmering electronic smooveness from the awesomely cool Ex Lion Tamer!

Super8Super8 has teamed up with Pageant to host a one day workshop with a screening and party to follow. Expect a night of film, chat and live entertainment courtesy of smoove amiga-core troubadour Ex Lion Tamer!

Participants will learn how to cut, splice and project Super 8 film, creating hand manipulated movie loops using various destructive techniques from pre-exposed and blank film. The workshop

runs from 11am till tate on the 22nd of August and costs £50 which includes all materials.

Bright-eyed, innocent Super 8 Virgins: that was how the five participants in EIFF Super 8 Workshop were when I first met them on the morning of the 24th. Barely seven hours later, here they are performimg their films live, with four projectors loaded with the most amazingly trippy loops of Super 8 the Film Fest has ever seen. (Well, in my opinion anyway…)

The workshop, which ran between 10am and 5pm, concentrated on ways of manipulating Super 8 film using various mark-making and destructive techniques in order to create something entirely new with a blank or pre-exposed length of film. By the end of the day, each person had created four or five loops, ready for that evenings live show.

A little break and a celebratory beer later in the Delegate Centre, at 7.30pm the lights dimmed and Matt began the soundtrack to the performance with the eerily-cool opener from ‘Get Carter’, signalling us to switch the projectors to full power…

After an hour of constantly changing visuals everyone had performed their own work for about 10 minutes each, but as my loops became too hot they started to fry and melt under the heat of the projector bulbs and was a prett neat way to finish!

I was exhausted, but as each participant was grinning wildly I could only assume they had a great time, along with the generous turnout from friends, family and EIFF staff and Delegates (although I’m sure some were only there because Happy Hour ended 5 minutes before we went on…)

Well done to everyone who took part. You rock quite a bit.
